Ukraine fought its way to semis
On the last day of group round of the Woman’s 17 EHF Championship, in group A, the match between Ukraine and Faroe Islands decided who would get into the semifinals. Ukraine had 4 points, Faroe Islands – 3. Consequently they were on the third and fourth places after the group leaders, Serbia.
From the beginning Ukraine seemed to be better prepared for the match. East Europeans took the lead and in the middle of the first half they were up – 9:4. The islanders put up strong resistance and the first half ended 15:13 in favor of Ukraine.
In the second half, Faroe Islands continued to fight hard and in the 22nd minute equalized – 23:23. Then it was 24:24 and 25:25, after which the Faroe Islands came forward – 26:25 but Ukraina pulled themselves together and the game ended 26:26.
This result suited Ukrainians. They got into semis.
Faroe Islands will fight for 5-8 places.
The best player from Ukrainians was named a goalkeeper Hanna Zhomer and the best of team Faroe Island was Jana Mittun (CB).
Liubov Fedorenko, head coach of Ukraine: The game was very interesting but I have some questions about the refereing. Im proud of my girls, they did great job. We needed a little more time, sometimes seconds decide everything.
Hans Andrias Midjord, head coach of Faroe Islands: We lost the first half. We started the game badly, the first 10 minutes weren’t so good. We played well in the last 20 minutes, maybe if we had a little more luck, we would have won the game.
